'The last time I heard her voice was August 8,' Jennifer explained. 'It’s odd that here we are again, on August 8, three years later,' she said of the film premiere.
'Right after we spoke, they told me she was no longer competent enough to speak but she sang to me on our call and we talked about my son and his cooking.'
'She loves to cook and so does he. I sent her a video of him cooking,' she recalled before emotionally adding: 'I truly miss hearing from her.'
Jennifer and Aretha first started regular phone calls after Jennifer wowed the legend with her performance in the Oscar-winning film Dreamgirls in 2007.

Jennifer fully embodied the Queen of Soul and even sang live on set in the fully-authorised biopic, which hits US theatres this Friday and UK theatres September 10.
The $55M-budget movie follows Aretha's career from a child singing in her father's church's choir to international superstardom.
'She's still with me, almost every day in some way,' the two-time Grammy winner - who had 80 wardrobe changes - told Variety last week.

Sparkle like Jennifer Hudson wearing custom-made Dolce & Gabbana
Jennifer Hudson continues to wow in stunning looks ahead of the launch of her latest film, Respect, the Aretha Franklin biopic.
Pulling out all the stops, she posed confidently in a glittering custom-made gown from Dolce & Gabbana – a look styled by fashion connoisseurs Wayman and Micah.
This head-turning number is cut to a strapless silhouette that skimmed over her famous curves, before making way for a daring split, which was balanced by a floor-pooling train. As if that wasn’t enough, a sheer overlay draped beautifully over her shoulder before falling past the undulating hem.
Jennifer continued the unapologetic theme by finishing with sparkling, embellished heels.
Now it’s your turn to make a smouldering statement. While her dress may be off the cards, we’ve selected a range of alternative styles that you can shop using the carousel below. They include an asymmetric ombré number from Rumour London at Wolf & Badger and an embellished one-shoulder style from Marchesa Notte at Farfetch.
'Sometimes, coming off of the film, while taking pictures with someone, I'm like, "Oh wow, I'm smiling like Aretha." Or "That response was more Aretha-like."
'You identify little things like that in yourself that are still there. Or, a lot of my own personal wardrobe now is things that resemble things that she would wear — a lot of fluffy, furry little jackets with leopard prints and things like that.'
Jennifer continued: 'Those things helped me embody character at times, because clothing can make you feel like the character you're portraying. And I still do the piano [after learning it for the film]. I'm still trying to master it. And guess what? The song I can play the most is Natural Woman so far.'
