Ashanti vs. Keyshia Cole Verzuz canceled after Ashanti tests positive for COVID-19. Here’s the new date. - NJ.com

A highly anticipated showdown between singers Ashanti and Keyshia Cole has been canceled.

After Ashanti announced she had tested positive for COVID-19, the Verzuz Instagram battle between Ashanti and Keyshia Cole was postponed.

Verzuz confirmed the news on Twitter and Instagram just an hour ahead of the planned battle start time, offering a new date.

“Unfortunately, we have to postpone tonight’s @Ashanti vs @KeyshiaCole #VERZUZ,” Verzuz said in Instagram post. “Ashanti tested positive for COVID-19 beforehand, and we cannot put anyone at risk in the process. First time this has struck us so close to showtime. We apologize to our incredible audience! Get well soon, Ashanti Wear a mask, stay inside, and take COVID-19 seriously. It’s truly affecting our community NEW DATE: January 9th, 2021.”

Earlier, Ashanti, 40, shared a message with fans on Instagram suggesting she could still move ahead with the battle.

“Hey y’all I can’t believe I’m saying this but I tested positive for COVID-19. I’m ok and not in any pain,” she said. “I’m actually down to do the verzuz from my house...we’re trying to figure it all out!!!”

The various bouts of the Verzuz battle series, hosted by producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, have stood out as some of the most-watched streaming events of the coronavirus pandemic, drawing up to a million or more viewers for each event on Instagram (and more on Apple Music) and allowing stars to run through their entire music catalogs in real time.

Previous bouts have included Snoop Dogg vs. DMX, Brandy vs. Monica, Patti LaBelle vs. Gladys Knight, Lil Jon vs. T-Pain, Jeezy vs. Gucci Mane, Erykah Badu vs. Jill Scott, DJ Premier vs. RZA, Ludacris vs. Nelly and Beenie Man vs. Bounty Killer.

The postponement of the battle between Ashanti and Cole, 39 — who hail from New York and Oakland, California, respectively — is the most last-minute cancellation in the history of the live series. But a Verzuz battle between Teddy Riley and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds had to be postponed twice. The first time was because Babyface and his family had COVID-19. The second time was because of Riley’s audio issues at the April 18 battle. The two producers ultimately pulled off a second attempt that Monday.
